Child and adolescent psychotherapy is a specialiased service for people under the age of 18 years old.
From the moment we are born, age is one of the main factors that affects our position in the world we live in. As we grow up, we are continuously facing change. Childhood, puberty, adolescence are periods in a person’s life characterised by changes and transformations that take place on multiple levels: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and sexual. Sometimes these changes also overlap with traumatic events and losses in the young persons’ life, which affects their internal and external stability, leaving them feeling overwhelmed, isolated and anxious.
Adolescence has been described as a time for of identity crisis when the questions ” Who I am ?” and ” What my purpose in life is?” become prevalent. In modern times, children and adolescents are facing a fast moving world characterised by demand and instant gratification, stress, (digital) bullying, social media, stereotypes (gender, body, religious, etc.) and anxiety. The inability to deal with these challenges may lead to unhealthy coping skills: addictions (drugs, alcohol, gambling, porn, etc.), eating disorders, self-harm, aggression, depression just to name a few.
Therefore it is important to provide them with a safe and confidential space where they can talk without the fear of being judged, that helps them to understand and make sense of the issues they are confronted with. Overtime, this also helps them to find and develop coping mechanisms that allow them to deal with the complexity of life challenges in a healthy way.
All our psychotherapist are aware of and compliant with the duties and responsibilities for mandated persons under the Children First Act 2015 and the Children First Guidelines 2017.
